Hi Augustina: Thank you for writing about this and bringing it to the attention of readers outside Nigeria (and the African continent). I had heard that very-conservative religion and the oppression of women are big issues on the African continent, and it really breaks my heart. I am sure there are complex socio-political and cultural issues underlying this problem that may take a person from the West like me a while to understand, and I wouldn't be surprised if the legacy of colonialism has to do with it. (In fact, I've heard that the reason why African countries are so homophobic is because many people think homosexuality is something imported from the West, when ironically, homophobia was what was imported from the West during colonialism).

We need to lift up voices like yours who are speaking out, and who have the lived experience to do so. If you know of any organizations that are doing good work that I can donate to, or at least follow, let me know!
