I found my way here after following that comment thread. I really appreciate you going into detail around this issue. It's certainly a lot of food for thought.

I'll have to meditate and digest your words for a bit before coming up with my own opinion. But my initial response is that I think people see the "all" implied when someone says "Such-and-such racial group does x" even if the "all" is not literally there. As to why Asians might see this invisible implied 'all' and you don't when you see a similar phrase about Black people, hmm, that's interesting to think about indeed...

To be very honest, when I first saw your sentence in question, I did get a tickling implication of "all" as a first reaction. When I think about WHY I respond this way, I think it's because the Asian community is a relatively small one in the U.S. when compared to other communities of colour, so as a community, we have a tendency to "feel small." We are also less talked about in mainstream pop culture and the news (I think under-representation of Asians in American media is one of the biggest problems of discrimination we experience), so perhaps we feel extra sensitive when we DO see ourselves talked about on TV, in the news, in a Medium article, etc.

(Now, I'm not saying this reaction is morally right. I'm laying out these thoughts as a [possible] explanation, not an excuse.)

Anyway. That's just my theory for how my community thinks. I obviously can't speak for everyone (#notall hahaha) and once again, you lay out some very fine points here that I'll definitely mull over. Again, appreciate you taking the time to write this!
