I had a similar experience but with my own parents! I moved back home for social distancing after a while of not living at home and it was difficult adapting to someone else’s rules. I think what the virus has done to a lot of families is reverse the roles of parent and child. When I tried to convince my dad to stop renovations on the house (people coming in and out), I felt like I was parenting my parents and they did NOT want to be parented.

It’s hard not to sound condescending when you’re frustrated, but I’m learning to be patient. I can imagine being the parent in this situation to be even more awkward when you’re in an in-law’s house and they come from a different culture. It’s also difficult to set boundaries and make your parents realize you are no longer a child but an adult with their own lifestyle.
