I have a similar experience! In preschool my parents dressed me up as Pocahontas. Now I cringe at the memory. But at least we've learned since then. I think most people would be forgiving if you were simply ignorant. It's what you do with your new knowledge (ignoring it and defending your clothing choices vs. acknowledging your wrongdoing and educating yourself) that counts.
