I have definitely internalized this. And I think some people call this "internalized capitalism." While I wasn't raised to work hard to the point of abuse, I was raised in a very disciplined, hard-working immigrant family. My schedule was always filled with extracurricular activities. I had to do supplemental homework after my schoolwork.
My parents definitely tried to raise me with as much knowledge as possible. I know they mean me well, but at the same time, I wish I had more time for quiet contemplation. I wish I had more time to pursue things out of passion and not out of "perhaps I can monetize this one day" (playing musical instruments) or "perhaps this will look good on my resume" (leadership programs/volunteering).
In my freelancing experience, the working 3-4 hours a day thing definitely rings true! I feel I can get A LOT done by bucking down 3-4 hours of intense focus, more than if I'd carved out an 8-hour workday.
Very interesting piece and you've piqued my interest in your book ;)
