Thanks for writing this. Yes, we in the Han community have a lot of responsibility towards fighting racism within our own ranks. Other commenters have noted that discrimination goes both ways (that there have been incidents of Black on Asian racism), but that doesn't negate the need for us to be proactive in addressing the racism within our own community. How can we expect others to respect us if we don't respect them?
If 2020 and BLM has taught me anything, it's that anti-racism begins within ourselves. Almost everyone in the modern age likes to think of themselves as a non-racist, but are we really? Most people have some sort of racial bias, whether they're conscious of it or not. I hope all of us, no matter the colour of our skin, will muster the courage to interrogate the racism within ourselves.
I'm extremely grateful of the fact that I come from a first-generation Han Chinese family that is relatively informed about these sorts of things. My elderly, first-generation relatives in the U.S. protested with BLM in their backyard, I was so proud of them! Change is possible; admitting we have work to do is something we should embrace, not be ashamed of.
